I have written about this topic before, but because it has such a positive impact on us and the people in our environment, I’m delving into the subject again.
As we go through life, we tend to get caught up in our individual world, our problems – our life. When we expand our world to include others in a meaningful way, by making a positive difference in their life, we enhance our experience at the same time.
Think back on a time when someone made a difference in your life.
Here is one of mine: I was going to college, working part-time, and just barely getting by financially. Standing in line at a local supermarket, I observed a woman in the same line, thinking that she was not very attractive (I have I learned a lot over the years). As I was checking out, I discovered that I did not have enough money to pay; without hesitation, that same woman I had been judging offered to make up the difference. It wasn’t much, but what that person did made a lasting impression on me. She was a beautiful, caring soul who was willing to help a stranger in an embarrassing situation. That happened over forty years ago and I remember it as clearly as if it was yesterday.
Other examples are the countless times I have had people smile at me, which brightened my day. I’ve often wondered if it was because I was smiling, which I endeavor to do all the time, or were they smiling to be friendly, which prompted me to smile as well. It has probably been some of both. In either case, that simple gesture (a smile) made a difference in my day.
I urge you to make a difference in someone’s life today, and consider doing so every day.
Simple practices that make a significant difference in the lives of others…and ours simultaneously:
- Listen intently, without interrupting or thinking about what you are going to say next.
- Appreciate something about the person you are interacting with: the color of their eyes, their voice, their smile, etcetera.
- Send a card, on no special occasion.
- Tell a friend or relative that you appreciate them.
- Give someone a sincere compliment.
- Lend a helping hand.
- Let somebody in front of you in traffic.
- Open a door for someone.
- Tell a loved one how you feel about them.
You get the idea. This is nothing new. There are countless ways to enhance another’s life. The question is, are we doing it? It does not cost anything, but it does require some effort on our part. I have found that as I do this consistently, the returns far exceed the energy required to do the deed.
Just looking for ways to brighten another person’s day raises our vibration, and when we act on it, we assist the other person to raise their vibration as well – it is mutually beneficial.
Today is a perfect time to start! If you are already doing so, bravo!
By doing good deeds, we become a shining example for our friends, family, acquaintances, and the strangers we interact with. I would like to think that, many times, they pay it forward and do something thoughtful for someone else, because of my thoughtful gesture.
It’s akin to the positive aspects of viral marketing, whereby we like something that someone has given us so we pass it on to another.
